we could wash the dirt off our hands now

The Lestrange family have been known for their enigmatic family, being hard to pin down and difficult to read at the best of times. If anyone met Rabastan Lestrange without knowing who he was, they would have doubts as to his parentage, would never quite be able to guess that he was the youngest son of the notorious Lestrange family. If one looked between the heir and the younger, they would wonder what was different between how the two were raised - one being cold, closed off, and the other being warmer, seeming as though he wore his heart on his sleeve for all to read. Although not sweet to those he deems lesser, he's friendly to those he considers equal (which are few, especially within the walls of Hogwarts), almost kind to those he considers friends. Certainly, he seems to be the polar opposite of his older brother.

Being raised as a Lestrange meant strict rules and harsh punishments if they weren't followed. Rabastan wasn't quite as willing to follow this as his brother, breaking rules when he thought he would get away with it and unlikely to confess the truth if confronted by his parents, leading to harsher punishments and more anger, more disgust from their youngest son. As much as he would like to understand their ways of raising their son, especially in his teenage years, Rabastan could never agree with it. He is, after all, a pure-blood just as they are. Surely these punishments are unfit for him, their son, especially their youngest - maybe not quite as important as the heir, but still moreso than anyone else. Still, when punishment came, he would accept it, if only because he knew he was unable to escape it. This caused a leeriness towards his parents who, although he still gives his loyalty, it's hardly unwavering.

The unwavering loyalty is for his brother only, who Rabastan has a small case of hero-worship for. If there was anyone he could say he looked up to without shame, it would be Rodolphus, his nine-years-older brother and the only person he trusts completely. There's nothing that his brother could to that would cause Rabastan to turn away from him, and he would even claim (if only to himself) that he would follow his brother into the depths of Azkaban were it necessary. However, his faith in his brothers skill allows him to think this without fear, if only because he knows that Rodolphus would never be so stupid as to end up there.

Being a Lestrange and wanting to make both his parents (despite his vague dislike) and his brother proud makes Rabastan work, and he works hard. Although he isn't unintelligent - far from it, despite his more outgoing personality in comparison to his family making him seem less so - and despite his sharp mind, he struggled more under the load of OWLs and NEWTs whilst in school, causing him to have to work harder. It was, perhaps, easier for him than other students in their year, but it was harder than he had had to work in the first four years of his schooling, and he hated the feeling of stupidity that would overwhelm him when he had to look further into something, or had to work harder at something because he couldn't quite grasp it. (He's a pure-blood, magic should come easily.) Still, he gained good marks, and a good position in the Ministry after, where he does his work efficiently and with some effort, at least. He wouldn't want to disappoint.

Despite this, he appears laid-back, though not to the point of laziness. He learnt his lesson the one time he didn't do well in one class (astronomy, it's hardly useful in his less than expert opinion, but he never got below an E in the class until he could drop it), and returning home for the first holiday of the year wasn't a pleasant experience. He's a Slytherin, has the ambition to do well, and the cunning to get what he wants without a sign of effort despite how much he may put in to something.

Even with his outward appearance of being easy going and even easier to read, he's still a pure-blood. He still holds the same disdain for any he may consider below him, including muggle-borns and half-bloods. He was still raised as a Lestrange and had all the etiquette and social decorum lessons drilled into him, and is the one to make most public appearances at balls and social events in the place of his older brother, and knows how to act when he is around people of equal or higher standing than him. Although he's open, he can be cruel and unkind, harsh and degrading when he wants to be - he knows his place, and he's willing to use that place to bring down others if he needs to, despite being the warmer of the two Lestrange brothers.

characters from this verse: history can be in bullet points or paragraphs, but, if they're bullet points, they must be in-depth. paragraphs must be at least three paragraphs. bullet points should show the same courtesy with details. lots of details! flesh them out. otherwise, you'll be ask to. let us know how they differ from the canon verse, what changes are in their history, what they're doing now, what they're going to be doing, etc.

characters from canon verse: same as above, but, since a link will be provided, let us know more about the canon point they're coming from. what state are they in, what state are their family and friends in, what state is the wizarding world in, how are they going to react to this new verse, how long have they been here, what have they been doing, etc.

abilities
lazy summer goddess,

if your character has any special abilities outside of the basic education they've received from school, bullet point them out here and give us a brief description.

remember: depending on their occupation or how well they did in their o.w.l.s or n.e.w.t.s, their abilities may vary. abilities can also be affected by the type of magic they do. ex. dark arts practitioners, such as death eaters, would be unable to create a patronus. do your research! also, be realistic. not all characters are geniuses or mad with power like albus dumbledore or voldemort. so, give us their strengths but also give us their weaknesses.

Family Rodolphus Lestrange (brother, 29).

The Lestrange family are old, wealthy, and prestigious. One of the foremost in the Wizarding world, and well-known for being enigmatic and staying out of the public eye if they could help it. Being cosy with those in power certainly never helped with that, but they managed to pull it off with almost effortless ease - their reputation for being unkind and fearsome would certainly be enough for this. After Tom Riddle became the Minister of Magic, the Lestrange family became the Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, and took on this job with pride and no small amount of glee. Their power was unwavering and unchallenged, just the way they liked it.

In 1960, the Lestrange family bore their second son, named Rabastan. Although not the heir to the family, he still had a place in society, and would be raised to take this place with expectation and little fanfare about it. He was the opposite of the eldest child, hardly the perfect child and doing things that he thought he could get away with but would eventually always be punished for, as if the walls had eyes and ears - which, looking at the portraits, they obviously did, though little Rabastan would hardly think of that. He would be two years old when his older brother went to Hogwarts, but that would not stop the developing devotion he felt towards the elder as he grew older.

Although not as interested in studying or the Dark Arts, he would still do his own reading when he had some chance to, alongside lessons in etiquette and the social decorum he would need to know as a Lestrange, and all of the duties that would come with it. This research would be encouraged in the younger due to his more rebellious attitude towards his parents, which made him disregard it under the eyes of his parents but sneak back towards it when he thought they weren't looking - though of course they always knew, and would leave him to it until they needed him for something else. Still, it would be times far and few in between that he actually took an interest before his time at Hogwarts, where he actually began to want to read about the Dark Arts more, especially as he grew older.

During his time at Hogwarts, although the name Lestrange held some weight to it, his more open personality (especially with those who knew his brother, or knew what his family were like) caused him to gain friends. Acquaintances in Rabastan's mind, never quite trusting those he surrounded himself with and never quite willing to let himself fall into the mindset of having people he liked be relied upon. It wasn't exactly lonely, but it wasn't a time filled with warmth and friendship - though he wouldn't complain, being untrusting by nature. It came in handy when it came to his OWLs and NEWTs, allowed him to work undisturbed and study as much as he could.

It was smooth sailing through the years, from 1971 to 1978, until his graduation from Hogwarts. Immediately upon his graduation, Rabastan took on the job of Head of the Auror Office, nine years after his older brother took the post. It is where he has been working for two years, currently living at home with his parents until such a time where he moves into his own home, or when he tires of his parents suggesting he find someone to settle down with.

abilities

In order to work in the Auror office, despite his family running it, Rabastan had to do well in varying subject in school: potions, DADA, herbology, transfiguration, and charms, with a particular talent for transfiguration and charms, though he finds the latter less useful. These were the subjects he studied hardest for in order to take up his waiting position in the Auror office, and thus he did the best in these subjects whilst in school.

Runes and Arithmancy, the two subjects going hand in hand, were his electives in school, and whilst they certainly didn't come naturally to him, Rabastan studied well and hard, and achieved good grades in the two subjects. The dark arts, while not as talented in them as his brother, are another subject he has become well learned in, especially with his rank as a Death Eater and the cautious interest he took in them both before and during his schooling, something which he hasn't given up now that he has graduated from Hogwarts.

Thanks to Rodolphus's tutelage, Rabastan himself has become adept in occlumency. Although interested in its counter, legilimency, he has yet to find the time to practice the art, and so is less than a beginner in it.

( diagon alley is thriving in the middle of the day, despite the heat bearing down on the bustling crowds and making them run from each shop to the next in order to hide from the shine. rabastan lestrange doesn't run, but instead walks as though he isn't dying inside from the thought of his cooling charms wearing off and the ensuing heat that will follow. it was a bad idea to venture into the alley today, considering all the last-minute shopping being done for the next year at hogwarts, and rabastan definitely doesn't look into the shops with jealousy because he misses the damn place, even if he wouldn't admit it even under the threat of torture.

for a moment, he even considers going into fortescue's to get an ice cream, before he thinks about the heat and melting ice cream, and what would happen were he to get any on his robes and look like a fool, making the house of lestrange look bad in front of all these undecent people roaming about the place. it's with a huff that he starts making his way towards gringotts, needing to do his own shopping, and hating every second of it. there's just so many people. )

Bloody Merlin, would you move out of the way? Some people are in a rush. ( that should work with getting them to move without causing too much of a scene, right? .. right? )
